The following is a summary of the 2024 LKG Habitat Enhancement Project.
Participants: LGA Volunteers, NCSU, NC WRC, VA DWR
Date: June 18, 2024
On May 7, 2024, a survey of planned work for habitat enhancement on Lake Gaston was completed. The survey showed minimal work was required to maintain the 14 habitat enhancement locations on the lake. Poplar Creek was identified as the location where the 2024 work would focus.
On June 18, 2024, a total of 19 personnel in four boats left the Poplar Creek Boat Launch at approximately 9:00 am. All four boats headed to the upper western arm of Poplar Creek. At this location, three cage enclosures were removed as the native vegetation in the area had taken hold to the point that the enclosures were no longer serving a useful purpose. Cages #2, #3, and #4 were disassembled and the posts and fence material were taken away for proper disposal. Approximately 500 feet of fence material and 50 fence posts were removed. At approximately 11:00 am a portion of the work crew headed to lower Poplar Creek where maintenance and replanting of native vegetation was completed at Cage #6. The work crews returned to the boat ramp where lunch was provided at approximately 1:00 pm. The following table outlines the work hours executed supporting the project:
